Kia Motors America recalls all 2008 and 2009 Kia Sportage crossover SUVs because of a possible risk of fire due to improper installation of the wire harness cover on the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).

The wire harness cover may not be adequately sealed, and moister damage could potentially occur to the HECU causing a fire.

Corrosion can occur, especially in places where winter weather calls for the use of road salt, allowing ice and snow to wear out the seal on the wire harness cover.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers Kia Sportage vehicles manufactured in 2008-2009 from August 9, 2007, to May 13, 2009.

Vehicle owners with the affected models will start receiving notices from Kia by November 28, 2016. Owners will then head to the dealership for inspection to either replace the cover or the entire unit free of charge.

Customers can call Kia at 1-800-333-4542 for any further questions and reference the recall number SC138.

Kia also has a dedicated web page where you can search for any recalls on your vehicle by entering a VIN#.
