HTC isn’t having a good time in the smartphone industry lately. The HTC U11, the flagship phone from last year was a solid contender in the premium smartphone segment, but it didn’t sell in numbers. With the hype of the Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ and the LG G6, barely anyone noticed this phone from the Taiwanese phone manufacturer.
HTC is playing it smart this year. They have pushed the launch date of the HTC U12 Plus, this year’s flagship, further so that it doesn’t have to compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy S9 or the LG G7.
With the Samsung Galaxy S9 launched months back and LG G7 launching tomorrow, HTC is anything but ready to showcase the U12 Plus. There has been a lot of leaks lately about the phone and here’s all we know about it- so far.
At A Glance
- What is it? HTC’s flagship phone for 2018
- When will it be out? By the end of May
- What will it cost? Upwards of $700
- Any unique features? Quad Cameras
HTC U12 Plus Design
The HTC U12 Plus has a shiny, almost mirrored, glass back. The back seems to be coated with the same Liquid Surface that we find in the HTC U11/U11 Plus.
As with the recent trend, the phone comes with minimal bezels all around. The phone, however, doesn’t have a notch on the top like the iPhone X, upcoming OnePlus 6 or the LG G7 ThinQ. Also, in line with previous rumors, there’s no 3.5mm headphone port in sight.
The U12 Plus is not particularly slim when we look at it from the sides. Hopefully, HTC has squeezed in a bigger battery and not wasted any space like on the HTC U Ultra. Rumors suggest the phone will have a large 3420mAh battery and if that’s the case, everyone will be happy.
Top Of The Line Hardware
The HTC U12 Plus being HTC’s flagship comes loaded with features. You can expect the phone to pack one of the best hardware in any smartphone.
It is confirmed that the U12 Plus will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and utilize 6GB of RAM. Thanks to the leaked images, we know that the HTC U12 Plus will come with an 18:9 aspect ratio screen. Also, since there’s no place for the fingerprint scanner on the front, the company has placed the scanner on the back.
The highlight of the HTC U12 is the quad-camera setup. There are two cameras on the front, and there’s two on the back. It will be interesting to see how HTC implements the secondary front camera. We predict it will be used for taking wide-angle shots for group selfies.
Also, the phone will also retain its ‘squeeze’ feature that lets you perform an action by just squeezing the phone.
HTC U12 Plus Price And Release Date
We can expect the HTC U12 Plus to launch by the end of May. With all these leaks and rumors, we are sure that HTC already has the final product ready.
Android Authority suggests that the HTC U12 Plus will cost $699 for the base 64GB variant and a little higher for the 128GB variant.
HTC’s smartphone business is grim with the company having lost $580 million just last year. There have been numerous rumors of HTC quitting the smartphone industry too. And if the company cannot turn things around, the U12 Plus will probably be the last HTC phone we wee.
